Son of the Beach

Monday, July 31st, 2000

Boredom, boredom, Republican National Convention, boredom, boredom, the perfect remedy: Son of the Beach. SOTB is a satire on Baywatch, and i must admit, the quality is horrible, but it is purposefully horrible. The jokes are sometimes off-color and offensive, ok, all of the jokes are offensive and off-color. But the jokes are sometimes subtle and they are the type of jokes that make you think “it’s ok to laugh at all of this, because if you can’t make fun of yourself what can you make fun of? and realizing that there really are people that think these things and the show is really making fun of them.” There are nazi allusions, a lot of sexual innuendos, and some un-p.c. knocks. I don’t know what I enjoyed so much, but it was exactly what i needed to break the skull drudgery. If you can take a joke and not think that it’s the most offensive thing in the world to poke fun at mostly everyone, don’t watch Son of the Beach. But if you’re looking for a refreshing twist to television, check out FX on tuesday nights at ten p.m.

The Perfect Storm

Sunday, July 30th, 2000

Seeing a boat eaten by a giant wave almost makes up for not seeing “Gladiator” in the theaters…”The Perfect Storm” is an excellent film. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg provide an excellent leading duo and they are backed up well by the likes of the excellent John C. Reilly and the more excellent Diane Lane. The story builds like the storm: a slowly building bomb. But achtung! do not see this film if you cannot handle sad endings, sorry to ruin it for you.

band of the week - archers of loaf

Saturday, July 29th, 2000

Splicing dark shards of lyricism with the raw guitar sounds that makes you clench your teeth and bob your head and the occassional airy pique of brilliance qualifies archers of loaf well for band of the week honors. The archers are pure indie rock. they, with several top-notch albums, etched a place among the top indie bands, they are parallel to pavement, superchunk, fugazi, jawbreaker, etc. Archers no longer reign in loaf-land, but we can still listen to their soothing sweetly soft/hard shards of songs, like Vee Vee’s “Harnessed In Slums”.
